  • develop your understanding of plagiarism

  • identify legitimate uses of sources and plagiaristic uses

  • raise your awareness of problems that can lead to plagiarism

NEXT-Plagiarism

  • a) What is plagiarism?
  • b) What different forms of plagiarism are there?
  • c) How many cases of plagiarism are reported annually to the Senate at the University of Glasgow?
    • around 200
  • d) What happens if someone is suspected of plagiarism?
    • 没资格通过考试和master(最后一个没明白 品质出口奖,我理解是对出国有影响)
  • e) What are some possible outcomes?
    • expelling/expulsion

You are here to learn, you are here to develop so just ask for help

Part A_Task2

  • a) Does anything in the University of Glasgow’s approach to plagiarism surprise you?

  • b) How does this approach compare to the rules on plagiarism applied at your former university?

  • Title: Using the World Wide Web for Research: Are Faculty Satisfied?

  • “Acceptance of the Web and satisfaction with its content also vary by academic discipline. Faculties in the sciences are most satisfied and those in the fields of language and literature are least satisfied.

  • Language and literature faculty also includes the highest percentage of non-Web-users. This suggests that faculty in this area see a need for improved and expanded high-quality subject-related Web resources.”

  • Herring, S. D. (2001). Using the World Wide Web for research: are faculty satisfied?. The Journal of Academic Librarianship, 27(3), 213-219.

A

According to Dr Davis Herring, “Acceptance of the Web and satisfaction with its content also vary by academic discipline. Faculties in the science are most satisfied. Language and literature faculty also includes the highest percentage of non-Web-users. This suggests that faculty in this area see a need for improved and expanded high-quality subject-related Web resources.” I agree with this view.

  • a) Is Student A’s use of the source acceptable or unacceptable?

    • Unacceptable
  • b) If it is unacceptable, what does Student A need to do to make it acceptable?

B

As Susan Davis Herring (2001) says, acceptance of the Internet and satisfaction with its content is also different by academic discipline . Science faculties are most satisfied and language and literature faculties are least satisfied . Language and Literature faculty also includes the most non-Web-users. This means that faculty in this area would like to see improved and expanded high-quality subject-related Internet resources.

C

A number of studies have found differences in perceptions of the Internet among faculty from different academic disciplines. Herring (2001), for example, found that academics in the sciences were more likely to regard the Internet as a useful source of information than academics in the fields of language and literature.

D

Academics in scientific fields were more satisfied with the Internet as a source of information than academics in the field of language and literature.

E

As Davis Herring points out, “acceptance of the Web and satisfaction with its content also vary by academic discipline. Faculties in the sciences are most satisfied, whereas those in the fields of language and literature are least satisfied.” (Using the World Wide Web Research: Are Faculty Satisfied? The Journal of Academic Librarianship, Volume 27, Number 3, pages 213 – 219)

  • In-line: Herring (2001, 213-219)

  • I feel overwhelmed by the difficulty of the task – I do not have enough time to do it properly and feel panic all the time; in the end I copy and paste because I have to hand in something.”
  • “I am not an expert – my paper is full of quotations because I am not as qualified to write as an expert on the topic.”
  • “Sometimes I don’t really understand what I’m reading very clearly, especially some theoretical stuff, so I copy and paste it into my essay.”
  • “My language isn’t good enough to use my own words – when I try to write something in my own words; it has many mistakes and doesn’t sound very good.”
  • “I know a lot of things about the topic, but I can’t remember exactly where I read it, so when I put it in my essay I can’t always give the reference.”
  • “I see many different ways of referencing; in the end I get confused and don’t know which way to use.”
  • “People say you will get into trouble if you do it, but most of the time it doesn’t really matter – I know lots of people who have copied and pasted from the web and nobody did anything about it.”

LessonB_PartA_Task1

Purpose - Academic convention

  • The benefits

  • Explore stages in the process of paraphrasing

  • “I know a lot of things about the topic, but I can’t remember exactly where I read it, so when I put it in my essay I can’t always give the reference.”

    *Tips*

    • Keep legible records of source material

    • Write down all bibliographic information when you start to read

    • Notes should be organised and stored sensibly for easy retrieval.

EndNote.

LessonB_PartA_Task2+Task3 转述方法+重要性

  1. What are the different ways that you have used to include citations and compile a reference list?

  2. What do you think are some of the advantages and disadvantages of the following strategies for including citations and compiling a reference list?

  • manually typing in everything

  • copying and pasting from a website

  • using citation software

Your answer should include:

  • to show range of reading,
  • to show understanding of reading,
  • to show ability to use reading to respond to task question

Paraphrasing

LessonB_PartA_Task4 转述实例

  • ‘The global phenomenon of the Internet is acclaimed since it creates a room for the flow of information and freedoms of opinion and expression more generously than the old traditional media.

  • This is due to the decentralization of communication and interactive feature of the new medium’ (Kıranoğlu, 2016: 2759)

  1. Note bibliographical details (at some point)

    1. 细节
  2. Read and reread original text intensively to understand the meaning

    • Check understanding of meaning if possible with a classmate

    • Decide whether it will be useful and in which part of your essay it might be used.

  3. Put the text away and write down your paraphrase (this might be very rough or even informal at this stage)

    • Work on the language and style of your paraphrase until you are happy with it

  4. Check your paraphrase meaning against original meaning – is it the same?

    2. Check paraphrase language against the original – is the paraphrase in your own words or is it patch writing?
    3. If there are parts of the original that could not be effectively paraphrased make sure you have used quotation marks
  5. Make a note of what the paraphrase might be used for in your essay

LessonB_PartB_Task 练习

ORIGINAL:

  • ‘The global phenomenon of the Internet is acclaimed since it creates a room for the flow of information and freedoms of opinion and expression more generously than the old traditional media. This is due to the centralisation of communication and interactive feature of the new medium’ (Kiranoğlu, 2016: 2759).

PARAPHRASE:

  • Kiranoğlu (2016: 2759) notes that the Internet is a cause of positive change because it allows significantly more people in societies to share ideas and information. In the past, he argues, large numbers would not have had access to such a devolved and extensive means of communication.

  • patch plagiarism

  • Similarly, future research should distinguish between “passive” procrastinators who are paralyzed by their indecision to act and fail to complete tasks on time, and “active” procrastinators who prefer to work under pressure and take deliberate decisions to procrastinate (Chu & Choi, 2005).

original

  • Internet is a universal collection of millions of distinct interconnected computers, networks, and associated devices. The innovation of computer systems, networks, and mobile devices has dramatically increased the usage of the Internet. Consequently, the Internet has become the target of cybercriminals and enemies [3]

  • According to Bhattacharyya & Kalita (2013, as cited in Shaukat, Luo, Varadharajan, Hameed & Xu, 2020 ), the Internet is a collection of a large number of different interconnected computers, networks, and related devices. The use of the internet is clearly up to a higher degree due to the emergency of new-type devices. Thus, cybercriminals and enemies move their target to the Internet

original

  • Computer networks are (or should be) designed to provide controls, which allow only authorized persons to access data.

  • As Shaukat et al.(2020) declared computers should be designed to be accessible only to authorized personnel since they are originally intended to provide control
